Pink Hope will inform, empower, support and give hope to young individuals who are affected and at a high risk of Breast and Ovarian Cancer
Krystal Barter is a fifth generation Breast Cancer sufferer. Her great-great grandmother and great grandmother died of the disease. Both Krystal’s grandmother and mother have both been diagnosed with Breast Cancer.
She is a young married mum with two beautiful boys, Riley and Jye. She discovered she carried the rogue gene fault BRCA1 and decided to have a double mastectomy at age 25. This difficult decision was encouraged by the thought that she wants to be around for her little boys as they grow up.
“Some things run in families like a musical talent, or the colour of your eyes. In my family, four generations of women have faced breast cancer, each at an increasingly earlier age,” Krystal says.
“I always knew my risk of breast cancer was very high, but it was not until I found out I carry the BRCA1 gene fault that it really hit me. My family's breast cancer history is quite rare but I have met some people who have similar histories. When I was younger I thought I was the only one. I started to do charity work for the National Breast Cancer Foundation and through that I gained the courage and determination to speak about my family history and try to make a difference.”
PANDORA and the National Breast Cancer Foundation have both pledged our support for Pink Hope so we can help Krystal to be creative and focus on helping other young people experiencing the effects of this terrible illness.
